Kindergarten Book Buddies-Learning About Disabilities

This week we had a chance to hang out with our Kindergarten Book Buddies.  We’ve missed quite a few times with them with all our snow interruptions, so it was nice to have a time to learn and share with our friends again.

This week’s activity came from a book the Kindergarteners read that was illustrated by a woman who is paralyzed from the neck down.  Now, how does someone who is paralyzed like that illustrate a book, you ask?  By holding the art utensils in her mouth, of course!  So, to experience what that would be like, to have to do Art without the use of our hands, we had a painting experience like no other.

Enjoy these photos from our day:

Chinese New Year Celebration 2014

This past week we wrapped up our study of the Chinese New Year.  This year was the Year of the Horse.  Throughout our study, we read some Chinese stories, explored tangrams, learn to count to 10 in Chinese, talked about Chinese inventions, ate with chopsticks, and concluded with a lantern parade through the school.  We enjoyed our lessons and learned many new things about China and the Chinese New Year.

Enjoy some pictures from our unit.  At the end of this post is a video of a Chinese Fan Dance that 4R learned in music class during our unit.  I think they did a lovely job!

What We’ve Been Up To…

Times flies when you’re stuck at home on snow days!  🙂  We have quite a few fun things that we’ve been up to in 4R lately, so this blog post is going to highlight a few of those!

Back in January, we spent a week learning about Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights movement.  We watched his famous “I Have a Dream” speech, and talked about how life was back then (and how far we’ve come!).  As a wrap up to our discussion and learning, we did a MLK project about our dream.

We also started our unit studying the Chinese New Year.  (Photos and activities from that unit will be coming in a separate post.)

Today during Math, we took a day to review the different types of lines, angles, and polygons that we’ve been discussing this chapter.  It was definitely a different way to review, as we used our bodies to show examples of the different geometric terms.

Lots of fun and learning in 4R lately, and more to come with our Chinese New Year unit wrapping up next week!

Kenya Mission Presentation Day!

Today in our church services, as well as during Bible study hour, was our Kenya Mission Presentation from our trip this past October.  We shared pictures, stories, laughs, and tears with our congregation.  We also have received some new sponsors for the kids over in Kisumu at Point of Grace Academy.  (There are almost 150 children who need sponsoring, so if you are interested, let me know and I can get you the information!)

Whether you were able to attend the presentation or not, I have included in this blog post the video that we showed during Bible study hour.  It highlights the different portions of our mission and gives a great overview of what we did while we were there.  The main focus is the children and finding sponsors to support their education, so that they grow into adults who can train the next generation to do the same.  However, there were many other aspects to our trip that touched different people on the team in different ways.  The video highlights those as well.

Thank you for your support!!
